THE HISTORY OF COLD LASER THERAPY IN ORINDA CA
Dr. Kevin Wong has been using state-of-the-art infrared, cold laser therapy at Orinda Chiropractic and Laser Center in Orinda CA since 2009. Laser units from both Cutting Edge Lasers and Multi Radiance Lasers are utilized for patient care.
Dr. Kevin was the first Medical Practitioner in California to have a fully robotic class 4 cold laser. Along the way, he has added other lasers to his practice to round out his offerings and enhance the care he has provided to hundreds of patients thus far.
In offering laser therapy for over 13 years, Dr. Kevin’s patients have been given an efficient avenue of pain relief. Laser has been shown to improve circulatory problems, swelling, inflammation, edema, lymphatic system drainage, sinus congestion, and arthritic joints. In essence, laser therapy speeds up healing.
As often is the case, the United States was a bit delayed in initially adopting laser technology. It has proven itself successfully in Europe for over 40 years. The cold lasers we used in our clinic are all FDA approved since as early as 2002 and are incredibly effective.
TYPES OF LASERS OFFERED:
Cutting Edge M6 Class 4 Laser
This is a multiwave lock system laser that locks 2 frequencies of laser together. It utilizes a robotic swiveling head aimed at the target areas of the body. It also has a handheld unit that can be used separately or in conjunction with the main, robotic laser head. Often these can be used to treat the same or 2 different problem areas of the body. Treatments are $60 per session.
Multi Radiance MR5 Activ Pro Laser Shower
This laser harnesses the power of 3 different wavelengths that progressively penetrate the skin deeper for extremely effective infrared light therapy. This handheld device originally came out in 2018 and keeps improving with each passing year. It has 200W of peak super pulsed power and is the most powerful super pulsed laser on the market.
Higher power also means faster treatment times and the large laser emitter allows me to treat large areas quickly, like the low back, spine, and legs. Treatments are $60 per session.
Multi Radiance Pain Away (Take-Home Laser)
This laser has only been available since 2020 and it is the world’s first Take Hoe laser. This allows a patient who can not come to the office 2-3 times per week for laser therapy to self-administer treatments at home. The presets on the laser make it easy for anyone to perform a treatment for 5 minutes in the morning and another treatment for 5 minutes in the evening. The rental period is for 7 days allowing the patient 14 treatments at a cost of $400.
This machine is safe, has no side effects, reduces pain and inflammation and helps people recover quicker from injuries and surgery. The following are frequently asked questions including a list of the many conditions or ailments the laser can help with.
WHAT IS LASER THERAPY?
Laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to treat painful and debilitating conditions.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Light energy enters damaged cells and stimulates their inter-cellular activity. This reduces pain in the area and speeds recovery of the cells. Once the cells recover, the process is complete.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING THE TREATMENT?
Laser therapy is a painless treatment that usually lasts 10 minutes. You may experience a comfortable or warm sensation at the point of application.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER THE TREATMENT?
70% of the patients seen positive results after 1-3 treatments. The swelling is greatly reduced and there is rapid relief of pain. Chronic conditions can be controlled with regular treatments. Acute conditions subside quickly.
WHAT ARE COMMONLY TREATED CONDITIONS?
These are conditions that patients tend to seek treatment for:
- Tendon and ligament injuries
- Neurological pain
- Disc disease (bulges, herniations, injuries)
- Chronic non-healing wounds
- Soft tissue injuries
- General pain
- Muscle strains and tears
- Musculoskeletal disorders
- Joint and muscle pain
- Pre and post-surgical treatment
- Arthritis and degenerative joint conditions
- Anti-inflammation/edema
HOW MUCH TREATMENT DO I NEED?
For most conditions patients present for care, a series of 6-7 treatments are recommended. Sometimes, fewer or more are necessary. It all depends on the individual’s case. For lower back conditions, studies have shown approximately 10 visits are optimal. We schedule the sessions with about 1-3 days in between as the effects of the laser are cumulative and build up with each treatment. You feel better with each successive treatment.
Once the series of laser visits are finished, you may choose to have treatments monthly or every two months depending on how good you feel or in some cases to help maintain your health. Many patients come back for tune up laser visits.
WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT COST?
Each laser therapy session costs 60.00. Studies have indicated that following through with a 6-7 session regimen is optimal for best results. If you choose to buy a six session package ($360.00), then Dr. Kevin provides a 7th session complimentary.
If you are a new patient to our office, Dr. Kevin welcomes you to discuss whether laser therapy is right for you. He will perform an initial Chiropractic examination to understand your health situation and pain. Your health insurance may have Chiropractic coverage and help cover the cost of the exam.
Insurance does not cover the cost of laser visits but your flexible spending or health savings accounts can. The office staff will furnish you with a statement of services that will serve as your receipt.
ARE THERE ANY SAFETY REASONS WHY I CAN’T HAVE LASER THERAPY?
Pacemakers, pregnancy and systemic diseases (i.e. cancer), and over the thyroid area are reasons we do not do laser. For other concerns, talk to Dr. Kevin.
CAN I COME IN FOR JUST THE LASER TREATMENT AND NOT THE CHIROPRACTIC CARE?
In the state of California, Dr. Kevin must perform a Chiropractic examination in conjunction with laser therapy. He understand that some of you reading about this laser would not consider going to the Chiropractor in the first place or you may already have one you currently see. Please understand that you are likely calling Dr. Kevin to trouble shoot a problem or ask him about specific pain you want to go away. He is only going to focus on the involved area of the body you are complaining about. His style of Chiropractic is different and part of doing a great job for you is to evaluate you properly.
The adjustments he will provide may not have to be very extensive and in any case, he can work with your current Chiropractor, Physical therapist, M.D. or massage therapist so that there is no overlap in treatment or over-treatment. Dr. Kevin just wants to be able to help you with his lasers, so talk to him and see how you can benefit from this type of approach.
IF I AM NOT A PATIENT BUT WANT TO TALK ABOUT CARE THAT INCLUDES LASER TREATMENT, WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME?
You can call to schedule an initial appointment where Dr. Kevin will perform an initial exam to find out about your specific health condition. He will find out how laser therapy and Chiropractic can help you. After explaining what is happening with your body and your condition, Dr. Kevin will outline your treatment plan. If you wish, your first laser and Chiropractic treatment will be performed that day. Expect to spend 30 minutes on your first visit, then 15 minutes for visits after that.
Payment of your 6 laser session package will be expected at the completion of the first visit. Or if you choose, you can pay 60.00 per session. Even though health insurances do not pay for the laser treatments, your insurance may pay for your examination in my office. My staff will check your health benefits for you. Your health savings account of flexible spending can also be used to pay for your treatments.
